He is only twenty-one years old when he begins the war. He says, I was too good for this war. Too smart, too compassionate, too everything (OBrien 39). OBrien also hates seeing blood. He desires to do something else and he did not want to experience the feeling of seeing dead soldiers. He did not want to think that any of his best comrades die. OBrien will complain, I had the world dicked-Phi Beta Kappa and summa cum laude and president of the student body and a full-ride scholarship for grade studies at Harvar d (OBrien 39). OBrien hates being a soldier and he could not stand the dirt nor the boys scouts. When he gets his draft letter, he thinks there should be a law where they have the ability to decide if they want to be in the war or not. However, they both have different dreams before entering the Vietnam War. In the novel, OBrien writes I was drafted to fight a War I hated. I was twenty-one years old. Young, yes, and politically naive, but even so the American War in Vietnam seemed to be wrong (OBrien 38). In the article about Donlon, he says he Wanted to serve in the Air Force, but he ultimately couldnt serve as a pilot because of a problem with his eyes. ( Ross) Throughout the war, they both lose comrades. However, they both keep fighting and do not care about the wounds. They are strong soldiers who will give their lives for their comrades. They are not afraid to die. They both care for their soldiers. They will see their soldiers die and will want revenge. They both have a family and they know that the family that is waiting for them at home. Their family knows they will either be back or not. Meanwhile, they fight to defend their comrades they try to hide. After the war, they will have a story to tell and how it will end. They will regret not being able to help some of their comrades out just as they cure their comrades wound and save their lifes. They both have the feeling of not being able to help out the one soldier they mostly care about. They will tell or write about their experience of the war. They both are not proud to say how many men they lose. However, they are both proud that they are able to make it alive. However, many of their comrades did not seem to make it. Moreover, these soldiers have many differences. Yes, they both experience war but they both have different feelings about it. Roger Donlon wants to be part of a war, so he volunteers in the military. Conversely, OBriens story is different, since he is drafted into the war. He did not have a choice; however, he says in the novel all the reasons why he hates the war: I saw no unity of purpose, no consensus on matters of philosophy or history of law (OBrien 38). He did not find any purpose in this war. OBrien has different dreams for himself, he never imagines being chosen to be in war. Roger Donlon wins a medal for being part of the war and for defending his team. He wins first place for the Special Forces. Meanwhile, OBrien and his leader Jimmy still could not get over losing a soldier (comrade). During the novel, it talks about his life. Everyone he meets he tells them about his experience in war. However, his wife and kids are tired of listening to him talk about the war. OBrien see ms to hate being part of the war. However, Donlon passion is serving for the war. Lastly, the main characters are both involved in the Vietnam War. The feeling of both soldiers seeing their comrade die right in front of their face. OBrien hates thinking about war or anything that has to do with it. Thus, Roger Donlon did not have the same thoughts as OBrien. He did want to be part of a war. He is not trying to lose a soldier or have to give bad news to their family members. The soldiers did their best to help out their people in the war. They would give their lives just to help other soldiers out. They are not thinking about themselves. The novel and article both show how the character did all they could to win the war. They are both strong soldiers who manage to defeat their enemy at war. These soldiers both have a huge experience in war and have a story to tell. They will never know when they will have to serve for their country again. However, OBrien does not want to be in another war again.

â€Å"Ugh. It’s just so hot! I can’t do anything it’s so hot,† I groaned. Mika looked over at me and mirrored the annoyed expression that I realized was on my face. I quickly wiped away the expression and tried for something a little nicer. After a bit I just gave up and lay down on the cement floor of our living room. It was cooler down there so it gave a moment of relief. The floor started to warm up where I lay though, so I had to keep moving from place to place so I wouldn’t start to sweat too much. It was October of 2014. Towards the end of the year was always the most miserable time for everyone. It was just before the rains came, so it was very hot and unbearably humid. During the worst days, I couldn’t bring myself to do much.†¦show more content†¦When it began to dump lots of rain every day, our back yard would turn into a mud bath. You couldn’t walk outside without slipping, sliding or sticking in the mud. Some people might think this very inconvenient, but Mika, Gabe, Tessa, and I quickly realized how great it could be. During that time, the termite hills in our yard turned into a giant playground of fun. The top layer of clay became muddy and slippery, which gave me one of my best ideas, probably to this day. I gasped in amazement at the brilliance of the idea that had just popped into my head. â€Å"Guys,† I said. â€Å"Lets slide down the hill!† At first we tried a few different techniques in an attempt to keep our clothes clean enough to wear another time in the future. We tried sitting on plastic bags, planks of wood and many other objects, but that didn’t end up working out as well as we planned. Whatever we were sitting on always ended up slipping out from underneath us. Eventually we just forgot about all of that and decided it didn’t matter that much if our clothes got ruined. So we struggled up the hills, trying not to slip and slide all the way down before we reached the top. Once we got to the summit, we chose the best path to slide down that wasn’t blocked by trees, bushes, or rocks. Decolonization An Evolution in Imperialist Relationships

Decolonization is a process where in the ideal understanding of the term would be ending the exploitive relationship between the colonized and the colonizers with the intention of being s self-sufficient of the newly independent state. The romanticizing that the process of decolonization can be looked at as a significant accomplishment for the colonized is misleading, or at least it is heavily contested by scholars like Fanon who argues that the process of decolonization is one that is an inherently violent one. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is one of the classic examples of purely American literature, it is about American people, who have American ideals, and live in a definitively American town. Many aspects of Mark Twain s are paralleled in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and in many ways it is Twain s expression of what his life was like as a boy growing up in Missouri. It is in essence, A novel about the mischief that typically accompanies being a child. Along with these childish aspects of the novel, Twain introduces many more serious thematic elements such as poverty and murder. These traits all produce one of the most influential novels ever written. The main character of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is that of its namesake. Tom is a young boy who lives with his aunt, Polly, and his cousin, Sid. They live in the small town of St. Petersburg in Missouri, which rests on the bank of the Mississippi River. Tom is always in some sort of trouble and Aunt Polly is always one step behind him in finding out what he has done. Tom s best friend is a boy named Huckleberry Finn, who is often called Huck. Discuss the Presentation of Personal tragedy in Disabled and Out, Out free essay sample

The Poems ‘Out, Out’ by Robert Frost and ‘Disabled’ by Wilfred Owen both contain many similarities and differences. Both poems tackle the issue of death and how precious life is, although they are from very different perspectives. Disabled has a much more personal approach to the subject as the story is told from a third person looking over the mans life, as opposed to in Out, Out where the narrator is detached from the characters, being an outsider. Out, Out tells of the events surrounding the death of the child whereas ‘Disabled concentrates on the effects of the mans segregation from his surroundings and the accident itself is not actually told. Wilfred Owen is the poet who wrote the poem ‘Disabled’ . He was making a point that if you are foolish enough to get yourself into things then you definitely have to be clever enough to get out of it. The young man in disabled wanted to be a soldier only because of the ‘fame’ you got with it. He goes about doing this by starting off very happily in the poem and as the poem progress’ he dims the mood and it suddenly turns into a deeply depressing poem. The most depressing line for me is when Owen says â€Å"and he will now spend six sick years in institutes and get whatever pity they might doll†. I think this is depressive because it is reflecting on the mans future and how it is going to be now that he has blown his legs off! Wilfred Owen wrote the poem in 1917 and intended on it to be written to give off a sense of tormented thoughts and recollections of a teenage soldier in the war. He wrote the poem to inform young men on how the war wasn’t glamorous at all but in fact if was actually life-threatening and gruesome. It also is written in first hand experience from when he was in the war and what he had seen in the war. This one poem was not just about one man who had foolishly gone out to war but it was a generalization to all the men who had gone out to war and lost their limbs. It shows a lot of irony in the poem of personal tragedy because he had lost his parents at a young age from war so it was a topic that was definitely very close to him. The next poem is ‘Out, Out’ by Robert frost. He is making the point that life is oh so valuable and that it can end at any one point, out of carelessness and foolishness. The situation in the poem is that there is a young man, we do not know his age but we can tell that he is a young teenager. The poem was written in 1916 and was based on the death of Raymond Fitzgerald, the son of a friend of Frosts, who died in the same way the little boy did in the poem. It shows a lot of irony in the poem as to how he died because of his friends sons death. The poem is trying to get across that sometimes doing the right thing will yet take your life, but you know you did good. and the ones who you thought cared, took it away for good. all in all, its not what youd expect. The titles of both poems illustrate how easy life is lost and how although the people in the poems are either dead or suffering their lives seem incomplete as ‘Out, Out’ is an unfinished quote from the play Macbeth and ‘Disabled’ shows that the term is not yet over. This seems to be the theme that both poems focus on, the pointlessness of the accidents suffered. Both of the accidents in the poems were rather foolish and could have been easily avoided. In ‘Out, Out’ it was the â€Å"Buzz saw† and in disabled â€Å"Some Cheered him home, but not as crowds cheer goal† and these two lines suggested a sense of suffering, either just before the accident or directly after. Throughout Out, Out the buzz saw is personified to sound like an angry, hungry animal. The poem seems to be loosely based around the boys connection with this saw and it is crucial to the poem. Words like snarled and rattled, give the reader a vicious image, which creates an uneasy feeling. In Disabled there is a very strong shift in time which emphasises the sense of regret, which is one of the important themes of the poem. The ex-soldier is feeling regret for joining the war and the irony of it is that he lied to be able to join: He asked to join. He didnt have to beg; Smiling they wrote his lie; aged nineteen years, The fact that he lied to make someone let him throw away his legs and his teenage years makes me feel very sad for the soldiers in battle. Owen wants to show the world that war brings nothing but misery and pain to us and that we should hold back from using violence. In Disabled, the sense of a lot of isolation is strongly present because of third hand perspective. He portrays a lonely man, waiting for dark. His life is so boring so he has a lot of free time feeling sorry for himself and pitying the helpless man he has become. His life has been planned for him without another option: Now, he will spend a few sick year in institutes And do whatever the rules consider wise War and fighting have left him helpless, alone and dependent upon others. If the poem was written in first person then the reader would be able to relate to the character more and therefore the sense of isolation and loneliness would die away leaving the poem without one of its strongest points. The structure of both poems is very different. In Out, Out the lines run continuously. There are no stanzas this could be to emphasise how none of the workers in the poem stop working after the boys death there is no consideration And they, since they were not the ones dead, turned to their affairs. Whereas in ’Disabled’ Owen cleverly links both visual techniques to create a particular setting. In the first stanza: waiting for dark, And shivered in his ghastly suit of grey Here Owen creates a sad atmosphere for the disabled man. We know from this opening moment that the man is waiting for his death and gives us a sense of doom. Mentally he is dead, though his heart still beats. He uses color to make the dismal effect because he says grey and dark. Both of the poets are trying to get across that accidents can occur very easy and sometimes they can be fatal. They want to get across that the value of life is ever so important to everyone and that your life could turn around in a batter of seconds.

Unlike the ambiguous poem The Tyger by William Blake, The Lamb, the previous counterpart to The Tyger, is much more straight-forward in its religious connection. One must contain a state of innocence to truly appreciate this poem, in which the narrator is a small child. It does not ask many questions, and the only questions asked are immediately answered by the child, so the only difficult in it is having the state of innocence to appreciate it. Blake shows us that innocence is not dependency or ignorance but a state that brings us a necessary perception of spiritual vision (Bryan). Blake shows us that the human self, the natural world, and the divine kingdom are all intertwined. The lamb represents the unity, the creator, and the sustainer (Bryan). The lamb represents Jesus Christ, as shown in The Lamb, â€Å"He is called by thy name,/ For He calls himself a Lamb,†(The Lamb lines 13-14). This is a reference to Jesus Christ and his association as The Lamb of God, therefore suggesting the narrator’s belief in religion, specifically Christianity. The narrator is aware of all these realities at all times, and it brings him peace and happiness that he must express (Bryan). This poem’s simplicity with the innocence of a child, attempts to bring the reader into seeing Blake’s â€Å"Divine Vision† (Bryan). The third example of William Blake‘s poems relating to religion is Proverbs of Heaven and Hell. It’s central idea is raising our own perceptions and triumphing over nature through nature. Blake suggests that there is no passive good, except with the angels identifying good and evil. He suggests hindrance and not action is evil whether one inhibits one or the other (Bloom). An example of one of the proverbs relating to their overall theme, â€Å"Sooner murder an infant in its cradle than nurse unacted desires,† (Proverbs of Heaven and Hell). This Guerra pg. 3 Line directly means to nurse an unacted desire is feeding a monster (Bloom). Bloom goes on to describe many of the individual proverbs and their hidden meaning, The stable may be either the home of the tamed â€Å"horses of instruction† of the Proverb (Foster Damon’s suggestion) or simply the stable of Christ’s birth, ironically leading into the grander structure of the Church. The vault is emblematic of Christ’s burial. In the resurrection of the body Christ passes out of the vault, but the Angel and Blake go to the vault’s other end which aptly leads into a mill, mechanical symbol of reductive reason. Once through the mill, and we are in the winding cavern of the fallen mind, in which any groping yields a way that is both downward and tedious, until we hang with Blake and the Angel over the abyss of nature, the unimaginative chaos of reductive intellect. This piece of Bloom’s analysis tells us how the lines of the poem relate to several religious references, the staple of Christ’s birth, his burial, and then how it all ties back into Blake’s theme about inactiveness. Proverbs of Heaven and Hell is a rather complex and long poem, with several messages in each stanza, but it does not change the fact that it holds many religious references, and how they all tie in to Blake’s beliefs regarding the human condition and spirit. Religion is an important aspect of daily life here for us; it gives us comfort and helps us answer the questions we otherwise cannot answer. It helps us promote order so we can please our divine figures. William Blake’s poetry was only made possible because of the passionate beliefs he held to himself regarding his religious beliefs which also lead to his beliefs about human spirit. Although antidepressant medications are often prescribed to people with MDD, it is estimated that 20-40% of depressed people do not benefit from taking medication ( Kirsch 2008,Hays,1995)).Apart from the efficacy these medications can also cause side effects like drying of mouth, insomnia and others amongst the few. Thus, researchers are developing other possible ways to reduce depressive symptoms. One such depression treatment alternative to medication is the transcranial magnetic stimulation or TMS. Briefly, TMS treatment involves placing a coil on the scalp surface and passing a current through it (the exact details of the strength and rate of the current are beyond our purposes). When the current passes into neural tissue it affects the way the neurons operate, in a therapeutic way. Objective and Aim of the Study We wanted to analyze whether the TMS approach is effective in reduction of the episodes of depression from the baseline levels at the end of week 4 in the major depressive disorder patients. Methodology The study was conducted across multiple sites but the procedures were the same across locations. The sites involved were Florida, Oregon, and Washington. Across locations, participants with a history of antidepressant-resistant MDD were randomly assigned to either a n active or a sham TMS condition. In the active condition, participants were actually given the TMS treatment. In the sham condition, participants were not given the TMS treatment but went through a similar procedure in each session (e.g., they came in for sessions in which a coil was placed on their heads but no current was run through it). So the sham condition was considered to be a type of placebo treatment. This was done to minimize the treatment limited bias of the study. The study was run double-blind so that neither the participant nor the assistant running the session was aware of which condition the participant was in. Thus the experimental design of the study was a randomized, multicentric, placebo controlled double blind study. This design definitely was important to give the way for a powerful analysis. The MADRS scores which is the set of scores that signifies the extent of depression of various parameters were analyzed to give a final depression score. The convention is, more the MADRS scores more is the depression and vice versa. Thus the results were analyzed by comparing the MADRS scores at baseline and at 4 weeks after the TMS treatments were implemented to see the effect of that approach on MDD patients. Ode on indolence is the praise of indolence/sluggishness; it makes the claim of the attractions of lethargy being more alluring than the attractions of the more active emotions of love, ambition and poetry. It is the admiration of the state of non-doing and non-feeling. The ode is a simple, straight forward story of a man who spends a lazy summer day in a state of numbness and does not want his visions of love, ambition and poesy to disrupt his indolence. These three figures are strikingly contrasted to the condition of indolence. The poetic persona could be Keats himself. The ode begins with the poetic persona seeing three figures one summer morning passing him by in a dream/vision, as if on a marble urn they returned with each turn of the vase. Their description resembles that of pilgrims with bowed necks, and joined hands wearing placid sandals and white robes, they were seen in profile. The figures are called shades and strange, the narrator is confused and cannot identify them. The narrators confusion is shown in the next stanza with the repetition of the questions regarding the identity and the nature of the figures. The word ripe is used to describe his time of idleness; this has positive innuendo and gives the impression of richness. The figures were robbing him of his summer-indolence, they are described as constructing a deep-disguised plot and are said to steal. These terms are negative and show these figures to be menacing or malevolent at least to a slight degree. In contrast indolence is compared to a blissful cloud that favourably makes pain numb and takes its sting away [metaphor], however it also takes the joy away from pleasure or pleasures wreath no flower [metaphor]. The narrator begs the shadows to leave him to his much longed-for nothingness. The term used- shadows insinuates the visions are dark and ominous. The third verse is commenced with yet another question addressing the reason for the figures appearance. His confusion is echoed in the word baffled. His soul is compared to a beautiful lawn strewn with flowers, stirring shades and baffled beams; the sky was clouded but there was no rain, only dew drops called the sweet tears of May. This pristine image of the narrators soul is brought on by the state of inactivity, thus we are made to believe that this state of being is desirable or covetable. He wants to bid farewell to the three shadows. The fourth verse shows the third turn of the urn and brings forth the realisation of the there figures- the fair maid love, ambition pale of cheek with fatigued eye and the maiden most unmeek poesy. Their description has negative connotations; only love is shown in a slightly positive light. In this verse the narrator feels intense urge to follow the three and longed for wings to fly in pursuit of them. Poesy is said to be the most appealing of the three and is called a demon; this could be justified by saying that it is because the narrator finds poesy most difficult to resist and it holds an almost enchantment like hold on him. Keats has expressed his wish to fly on the wings of poesy before in another poem. In the fifth stanza a question is posed to love to establish its elusive nature. Love is also criticised as being fleeting and short-lived and not to mention folly. Ambition on the other hand is condemned as being a mortal emotion that springs from the human heart. From other poems- ode to a nightingale or ode on a Grecian urn- we know that Keats has trouble with mortality and impermanence. And as for poesy, it has not a joy compared to honied indolence- the narrator would rather be devoid of common-sense and spend his drowsy noons numb and listless completely ignorant to the world around him [I may never know how change the moons]. The concluding stanza says adieu to the three and marks their defeat in rousing the narrator from his laziness. He commands the phantoms to vanish and never more return. He banishes them back to the dreamy urn and reduces them to faint visions. But taking into account that the state of indolence as compared to the three visions is hardly mentioned, it is not very convincing that the poetic persona prefers indolence over his other temptations [especially after reading some of his other poems]. It does however come across that he is trying to deny his passions even to himself.

Irony in Oedipus the King Essay -- Oedipus the King Oedipus Rex

Irony in Oedipus the King      Ã‚   When Sophocles wrote Oedipus the King, he knew that his audience would have some idea as to the outcome, his tale being a Greek tragedy which follows a strict form. Not wanting to write a predictable, bland play, Sophocles used this knowledge to his advantage and created various situations in which dramatic irony plays a key role. Dramatic irony is present when the tragic truth is revealed to the audience before it is revealed to the characters within the story. Through this use of irony, Sophocles succeeds in telling a fresh tale. Even though the audience knows how the story will end, they are intrigued by the presence of irony. By crafting irony into his tale, Sophocles gives the reader a desire to see how Oedipus is going to mentally react to the events that are sure to transpire.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Oedipus is self-confident, intelligent, and strong willed. Ironically these are the very traits which bring about his tragic discovery.   Because of these traits Oedipus was able to solve the riddle given to him by the Sphinx.   When this riddle was solved he acquired great popularity and power.  Ã‚   He was then challanged into a riddle of his own where he had to find out the truth of his past and the fate of his future.   By solving this riddle he lost all the power and glory, left to be exiled and become a beggar in another land.   If Oedipus had not been so determined to escape and prevent the prophecy by the Oracle, he would not have fulfilled it. Possibly, he was doomed to fulfill the prophecy because he believed he could avoid it. Nevertheless, his fate was sealed by his actions of pride and determination. His pride of conquering the Sphinx led him to the marriage of Jocasta, his mother. Whe... ... truth, whereas when he blinded himself he knew the full truth of what the oracles had said. Columbian Exchange

The Columbian Exchange â€Å"Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492† is a common expression used today about the discovery of the Americas. What happens after the discovery of the Americas? Transculturation. This is the mixing of cultures in which both sides change in one way or another (Murphy, 1-14-13). The Columbian Exchange happened when people from Europe and Africa settled into Latin America and the Caribbean after the discovery of the Americas. The Columbian Exchange brought over diseases to the Americas, plants and animals, and the exchange of silver.The colonization of the Americas made exchanging animals and plants happen daily. Sugar was one plant that was brought over. Sugar was brought over to Brazil from the coast of Africa (Crosby, 69). Towards the end of the 16th century, Brazil became the biggest producer of sugarcane. At first, sugar was only bought by the rich but over time it was an important crop in everyone’s day to day life. Sugar coul d be boiled down into concentrated, making it easy to fit in ships, causing it to become the cash crop for centuries (Chasteen, 24).Brazil was producing 57, 000 tons of sugar annually in 1610, in which the English started to produce sugar which drove the production down in Brazil (Crosby, 69). Sugar created harsh working environments and ended up having slaves do all of the work. Slaves were purchased and brought in from West Africa (Wolfe, 150). Maize, potatoes, tomatoes, and many other plants were added to European and Africa diets. Many crops that exist in European nations have come from the Americas during the Columbian Exchange.Tomatoes were grown in the Americas before they made their way to Italy. Italy is known for their food that uses tomatoes and many people think that the tomato originated in Italy. The tomato got brought back to Italy throughout the trips from the Americas. Maize was introduced to Asia in the 16th century, which was a factor for population growth in Asia (Crosby, 65). As Winn states â€Å"But not much of the Columbian exchange was not positive for the indigenous people of the Americas† (Winn, 43), most of the Columbian exchange was lop sided.Europeans and Africans got the better end of the Columbian exchange due to the fact that they transferred many of the diseases instead of receiving them. In the 1540’s, a silver mine located in Potosi, Peru was opened up by the Spaniards (Chasteen, 50). The town of Potosi blew up due to this new economic growth that was happening. The working environments were harsh; men had to carry pounds and pounds of silver down the mountain (Murphy, 1-28-13).From 1503-1660, 700 million pounds of silver gets exported from the Americas to Europe (Murphy, 1-28-13). The problem with silver is that it has boom and bust cycles, where one year silver may be at its all-time high and the next the economy takes a beating. The money being made was through the taxing of this silver. The exchange of silver brought the Americas and the rest of the world together. This was due to the trade that was happening with the silver. The crown in Spain received around 40 percent of all the silver profits (Wolfe, 139).The crown received this money due to the royal fifth or settlement of American taxes (Wolfe, 139). Around 30 percent of the silver was illegally traded to the crown did not receive that money (Murphy, 1-28-13). No food is able to grow at Potosi so all of it had to be imported from other countries. This created huge trade relations across the world. The food from Potosi would be imported from elsewhere because it was cheaper, causing the prices to rise in the Potosi economy (Wolfe, 139). In the early 1800’s, the silver ran ou t and the town of Potosi went down with it.This shows how much the Spaniards had an impact on the Americas, Peru in this instance. The diseases that Europe and Africa brought in during colonization to the Americas were the biggest negative impact of the Columbian Exchange. Diseases wiped out populations in the Americas. Native Americans had no immunity towards the diseases that were coming in. Diseases like smallpox, measles, malaria, plague, and many others were killing native people uncontrollably. In lower and upper Peru, the population declined from 5 million to less than 300 thousand in 1780-1790’s (Wolfe, 135).As shown in this quote by Winn â€Å"The result was the greatest demographic disaster in history† (Winn, 43), this epidemic effected wherever colonization happened in the Americas. The old world diseases were not intentionally spread to the Americas but were a side effect of transculturation. The Columbian exchange was a major factor in the Colonization of the Americas. New foods were exchanged between the Americas and Europe and Africa. Animals were also swapped during this exchange, which created economic opportunities.The finding of silver in Potosi helped Spain gain money through taxes.
